Academic Research on Musicians’ Hearing

Vanderbilt Study: IEMs and inherent hearing protection
This study shows that, manufacturer suggestions to the contrary, using IEMs does not provide inherent hearing protection. The critical finding is that, without proper instruction, musicians tend to use the same level setting with IEMs that they are accustomed to with floor wedges. This underscores the importance of audiology in teaching IEMs users to consciously seek the lower listening levels that sealed earphones allow.
