| Paul Reed Smith jams with 3D Active Ambient IEM System
Sensaphonics 3D Active Ambient system lets the sound in while protecting hearing in live performances by legendary luthier.
CHICAGO, IL (August 9, 2007) Legendary guitar maker Paul Reed Smith has a new tool he uses when playing live on stage with his band. In order to stay connected with the natural sound from his amp while controlling the volume level reaching his ears, Smith uses the 3D Active Ambient IEM System from Sensaphonics.
“Essentially, it’s an in-ear monitor system with microphones attached. The 3D lets me hear everything acoustically, just as I would without earphones. The only difference is, now you can control the volume coming from the stage and add in any amount of monitor mix,” notes Smith. “They’re an excellent way of protecting your hearing while still having a natural feel for the crowd and the amps, which is really important for guitarists. The 3D lets me play live night after night without my ears ringing, as with normal floor monitors.”
The Sensaphonics 3D Active Ambient is the only IEM system with microphones embedded in the earphones, allowing the artist to hear stage ambience with full fidelity and natural binaural directionality. The audio from the mics is combined with the in-ear mix in the 3D bodypack, then sent to the earphones with zero latency. As a result, the sense of isolation found in other personal monitors is eliminated, allowing musicians to hear their amplifiers, the audience and each other. The custom-fit 3D earphones provide up to 37 dB of isolation, giving the artist total volume control of both the IEM mix and stage ambience.
Whether guesting on stage with a national act, gigging with his Paul Reed Smith Band or jamming at industry trade shows, Paul Smith feels the 3D Active Ambient system is a godsend. “I specifically use the 3D as hearing protection,” he notes. “It can be 125 dB on stage, but I’m listening to 95 dB of full-range, beautiful-sounding audio, with or without a monitor mix.”
Sensaphonics president Michael Santucci comments, “It’s very cool to have a guy like Paul Reed Smith adopt the 3D. He knows the issues that guitarists have with using conventional in-ear systems, so it’s very gratifying to hear how the 3D helps him hear what he wants to on stage.”
